As the whole world is becoming more and more conncected, it is necessary for us Chinese people to understand the westerners way of thinking, patterns of beaving and so on, in order to communicate better. And I think it’s also important to know their way of making friends.

Americans use the word “friend” in a very general way. They may call many connections friends, such as school friends, work friends, sports friends and neighbour friends, all of which are based on common interest. When the shared activity ends, their friendship diasppear. In some cultures friendship means a strong lifelong bond between two people. Studies show that one out of five American families move every year because they must change their jobs, whose result is that American friendship develops very quickly. It may seem that Americans seem friendly—they often chat with strangers and exchange information about their families, hobbies and work. And they may smile warmly, saying “Have a nice day”or ” See you later”. Schoolmates may say, “Let’s get together sometime” But their friendliness is not always an offer of true friendship.

Learning how Americans view friendship can help non-Americans avoid misunderstanding. It can also help them make friends in the American way.
