It was Children's Day last Monday. Today, we went to the English corner and shared with our American friend, Jim, how we celebrated our Children's Day this year.

Lucy(林靖怡) went to a park with her friends, because she loves outdoor activities. Robin(赵民骏) did not go out on that day, but he was given extra time playing computer games and he received a lovely toy from his parents. Wow, not bad at all!

As for me, I told Jim that I went to the Mixc City(南宁万象城) with my friends. We had really good time there, skiing, eating hamburgers and drinking coffee. To our surprise, I also ran across some other friends, they seemed to have a lot of fun too.

Jim told us when he was young, people did not celebrate Children's Day in America. Luckily, children in America now can have their Children's Day, it is on June 3rd each year. On this day, children in some parts of America may go to churches, have funny games or even a picnic.

We also talked about Children's day in other countries, such as Singapore and New Zealand. In Auckland this year, they had a fun fair on the ASB Show-grounds for children. Entries were free. What’s more, children could have free candy floss and face painting was free too. They could watch live performances, ride on ponies, try the racing cars and other fun games. How fun!

I told Jim that I liked ferry wheels the best. I think it is especially exciting. Then I added, “I wish I were there in Auckland.”

"Oh, I wish I were there, too."Jim smiled and said.

My dear friends, what about you?

most of us look away when we pass strangers. it is the epectional person who stops to help the woman maneuvering her kids and groceries up the staircase. we rarely give up in line or on the subway or bus. locked into our automobiles, we prefer gridlock to giving way.

these daily encounters, when they are angry or alien, diminish our lives. when they are pleasant, we feel buoyed. yet when we sit at home and make resolutions, we think about what we can accomplish in private spaces ome, work. too many have given up the belief that they control the shared, the public world.

as individuals we can change the contour of a day, the mood of a moment, the way people feel. the demolition and reconstruction of public life is the result of personal decisions made every day he decision to give up a seat on the bus he decision to be patient or pleasant against all odds he decision to let that jerk take a left and turn from a right and lane without rolling down the window and calling him a jerk.

its the resolution to be a civil, social creature. this may be a peak period for the battle against the spread of a waistline and creeping cholesterol. but it is also within our will power to fight the spread of urban rudeness and creeping hostility. civility doesnt stop nuclear holocaust and doesnt put a roof over the head of the homeless. but it makes a difference in the shape of a community, as surely as lifting weights can make a difference in the shape of a human torso.

Think a minute! You've probably heard the expression “A leopard can’t change its spot.” Which, of course, is true of leopards. But is it true of people? Can people change? Are we human just creatures of habit? Do we not have any control over our actions and habits?

One guy said, “Bad habits are like a comfortable bed: they’re easy to get into, but hard to get out of.” Someone else said, “The chains of habits takes effort, yet one of the greatest freedoms in life is the freedom from bad habits.

Habits are like the roads we take through life everyday. The problem is not every road takes us where we need to go. Our routes through life become our ruts in life, which we end up stuck in and find it hard to dig ourselves out. That’s why we must change our bad habits as soon as possible before they become our “second nature”, because our habits become our character and our character becomes our life. As one wise person said, “First we make our habits, then our habits make us.”

But we humans don’t like to change, do we? So we come up with excuses, like: “I can’t be different, that’s just the way I am.” Or “I was born this way.” And the good old saying: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But that’s just it, we’re not dogs or animals. In fact, we’re the only creatures who have the freedom and power to change and choose the kind of person we want to become. So what habits do you need to start changing today?

Perhaps the most vital person I have ever met is an Italian professor of philosophy who teaches at the University of Pisa.Although I last met this man eight years ago, I have not forgotten his special qualities.

First of all,I was impressed by his devotion to teaching. Because his lectures were always well-prepared and clearly delivered, students swarmed into his classroom. His followers appreciated the fact that he believed in what he taught and that he was intellectually stimulating.Furthermore, he could be counted on to explain his ideas in an imaginative way, introducing such aids to understanding as paintings, recordings, pieces of sculpture, and guest lecturers.

Once he even sang a song in class to illustrate a point. Second, I admired the fact that he would confer with students outside of the classroom or talk with them on the telephone. Drinking coffee in the snack bar, he would easily make friends with students. Sometimes he would challenge a student to a game of chess. At other times, he would join groups to discuss subjects ranging from astronomy to scuba diving. Many young people visited him in his office for academic advice; others came to his home for social evenings.

Finally,I was attracted by his lively wit. He believed that no class hour is a success unless the students and the professor share several chuckles and at least one loud laugh.Through his sense of humor, he made learning more enjoyable and more lasting. If it is true that life makes a wise man smile and a foolish man cry, then my friend is truly a wise man. Probably the best example of his wit is this bit of wisdom with which he once ended a lecture:“It is as dangerous for man to model himself upon his invention, the machine,as it would be for God to model Himself upon His invention.”
