Qin Shi Huangdi, First Chinese Emperor

A ruler from the western state of Qin united and subjugated the Warring States and formed China in 221 B.C. He declared himself the first emperor of China and named himself Shi Huangdi (meaning First Emperor).

During the Qin (Ch'in) Dynasty (221 B.C. - 206 B.C.), the emperor connected and extended the old fortification walls along the north of China that originated about 700 B.C. (over 2500 years ago), forming the Great Wall of China to stop invading barbarians from the north.

The Emperor standardized Chinese writing, bureaucracy, scholarship, law, currency, weights and measures. He expanded the Chinese empire, built a capital in Xian, a system of roads, and massive fortifications and palaces.

Shi Huangdi (259-210 B.C.) was a cruel ruler who readily killed or banished those who opposed him or his ideas. He is notorious for burning virtually all the books that remained from previous regimes. He even banned scholarly discussions of the past.

The Qin dynasty ended soon after his death, but a unified China remained for over 2,000 years. China's name is derived from his short but seminal dynasty, Qin (pronounced Chin).

While for Chinese players, they have the special weapon to protect themselves. A foreign player even wanted to buy one. Everyone was so curious, then we saw the picture of the weapon—mosquito net. Everyone laughed out loudly, because it was such an ordinary equipment for Chinese people, while more foreign players were surprised by such special equipment, and they also wanted to own it. The other Chinese element is the cupping glass. When we watched the match, we found that some players had the red circle marks in their bodies. It was the Chinese traditional treatment. The foreign players enjoyed this treatment and they spoke highly of it. Chinese elements are hot outside the stage.

much has been discussed recently on english teaching at college, someone says that it is a total failure. to some extent , it is reasonable to say so, for after ten-year english learning, most graduates can't properly communicate with foreigners, nor can we translate between languages, let alone write in english. where are the problem?

to begin with, english teaching at college, to a great extent, teacher-centerde, turning a language class into an information class. it is still very common in the classroom that the teacher explains every language point in detail, while students take notes all the

secondly, culture is neglected in english teaching because of poor text design. some redundant unrealistic materials and a great deal or grammar and structure exercises in the text lead to students memorizing a large vocabulary and a lot of english rules. few students know how , when and where to use them.

finally, test-oriented education, in a sense, misleads and impedes college english teaching in china. for example, colege english test band four or six is so overemphasized in some colleges that teachers teach to the test, sacrificing learning for the sake of test results, and students only learn to pass the examination. as a result ,students actual language competence is weakened though the passing rate has increased.

in conclusion, chinese english teaching is to be reformed. students should be centered on , culture knowledge ,should be introduced in language teaching , and examination should be dealt with appropiately.
