Overseas Study at an Early Age

Nowadays more and more parents are eager to send their children to study abroad before they finish high school by whatever means and at whatever cost.

It is quite understandable for parents to send their children to study overseas because they place high expectations on their children. They are encouraged by the success stories of those who have completed their overseas study. With the development of economy, companies and institutions at home are giving more and more emphasis on overseas experiences, too. Consequently, pursuing overseas study became a kind of short cut in gaining a better future. Moreover, there is still one underlying reason for this rush-economic reason. The rapid economic progress in the past few years in China has enabled more and more parents to afford the huge cost for their children’s overseas study.

As for me, overseas study is surely a helpful way to get both advanced knowledge and necessary experiences, but overseas study at an early age is neither necessary nor benef1cial. The students may be too young to either tend for themselves or think for themselves. I do think that overseas study can contribute to one’s self-improvement, but it’s better to be pursued after one has finished his college study at home, when he is more capable of learning and living on his own.

Now, I want to share one of my experiences with you. Yeah, its something about one of my favorite sportsswimming. However, I have always afraid of swimming until I graduated from Senior High school. Now, I will tell you why I changed my ideas.

When I was a child, I often went fishing with my father. Unluckily, an accident occurred to me one day. I fell into the river suddenly and I shouted to my father Father, help! help!(Of course, I hadnt learned swimming skills at that time.)Then my father jumped into the river and saved me from the river as quickly as he could. There was nothing with me but I have no desire to swim anymore. I just too scared to touch water in rivers or swimming pools. I certainly lost my courage. My parents wanted to teach me how to swim but I refused. When I graduated from Senior High school, I thought I should change something in my life. I was an adult and I should have courage to face all the things I used to be afraid. I should try to swim. I got over my frightening to learn swimming skills and I made it. Since then swimming becomes one of my favorite sports.

Though those examinations were still a year away, I had to start early to make myself well prepared by reviewing all those things I had learned at school this summer vacation was the ideal time for me to do this. At first I was rather dismayed at the thought of this,8later I thought it was better this way because by working hard this summer I could count on endless happy summers to come. With this in mind I then set to work like anything and occasionally went out for a change or did some physical. I was not at all bored by this kind of life, for I was sustained by a hope.

Having been working in this society for many years, I experienced lots of things, some of which I can never forget in my life; such as my first order in sales life, first resigning letter, first foreigner lover…etc. I would like to share with you some of my embarrassed moments in my career life.

I take this moment as the most embarrassed one. It was in 1999 when I was in Singapore selling office equipment of FX. I was surrounded by about 10 customers when I was doing a demonstration on how to operate a digital photocopier for them. I had been doing this for so many times that I spoke something before they went through my minds sometimes. I was supposed to say: This system can do copying, scanning, printing and faxing. I said, however, “This system can do copying, scanning, printing and sexing”! I realized my mistake immediately after I spoke them out of my mouth. People in the office kept silent for a while, nobody spoke a single word. Then, a manager of my customers murmured: It will be a fantastic machine if it can do sexing. My face was blush with embarrassment, and I kept asking myself what the hell I was thinking about to say this word out. That’s the most embarrassed moment I have ever had in my entire life so far. The company bought the machine in the end, though.

The other moment was also happened to me when I was a salesman. The catalog of my copiers says that the color copiers of FX will never print out cashes. So there was a time one of these copiers were on trial in a customer’s office, when he was suddenly curious to find out how could the copier recognize cashes. I told him with confidence that I would bet for it. I put the S$10 paper on the copying screen, pressed “copy’ and a copy of the 10 bucks came out without “hesitation”. My customer said: I thought your copier would not copy money. And the way he looked at me made me believe I was a total liar. Actually I just forgot to press a button before I pressed “copy”. But I was extremely embarrassed at the moment cause I never lie to my customers. Seriously, I have never lied to any of my customer before in my sales life! And I’m not going to do it at all.
