My grandfather says,when he was very little,the water in the river was very clean. He often swam in the river with his friends.

That was before,but now we cant see such clean rivers. Lets protect the water from pollution,because we cant live without water. The water is really important to us all.

Water pollution is caused by waste from factories and cities. Oceans are able to clean themselves,but certain seas,once they become dirty,are not able to do so. One example is the Mediterranean which lies between Europe and Africa. It has onlyeone narrow entrance to the ocean in the west. On quarter of the shores of the Mediterranean are polluted and are no longer safe for swimming,as a lot of diseases are present in the water. In most places it is not safe to eat the fish.

Lakes also have the same problems. Lake Baikal in Asia was once the cleanest in the world,with over 700 different kinds of plant and animal life. Now,however,the waters of this great lake,which is also the worlds deepest (over 1,740 metres),have been dirtied by waste from a chemical factory.

In 1988 an oil tanker hit a rock off the northwest coast of Alaska. 35,000 tons of oil poured into the sea. The accident was one of the worst in history. More than 34,000 birds and 10,000 animals were killed. 4,800 square kilometres of ocean were polluted.

The 220 kilometer river he watches is relatively undisturbed by channels,dredging or major reservoirs. James Holland has spent a lifetime on the river as a crab fisherman,but blames the decline of fisheries,and the failure of his business,on poor water quality. Now as an advocate for the Altamaha,the 60 year old retired crabber responds to reports of erosion,loss of wetlands,and the illegal dumping of pollutants from agriculture and industry. I view it as my job to end pollution where I see it,when I see it,said James Holland James Holland finds garbage stashed in tree trunks and pools of diesel fuel and abandoned trucks at logging operations near the river.

A recent complaint on hog waste from a processing plant in the watershed led him to take a closer look. In doing so I found the County making preparations for paving a road,he said. They were widening it and making improvements. And,in doing so they destroyed wetlands. They didnt have enough erosion control to prevent erosion. I went further on from the spray field and from the area where I could view the spray field,the guy up there was draining wetlands. I found a ditch where he was draining wetlands.

I also found right there standing in one spot where he destroyed two wetlands in the last two or three years. Its just a whole hot of things. Its unreal is what it is.
